During the spring months of 2020, 9-year-old Emilia, daughter of caboodle Managing Director Catherine, decided to use her baking talents to help raise money for a charity she and her mother are very fond of.
If you’ve been following us for some time now, you’ll know we do a lot to fundraise for our charity partners Cure Leukaemia.
We’ve done a fair bit of fundraising this year and Emilia was keen to get involved, and so after picking up a wooden spoon during lockdown and brushing up on her baking, she decided to create her own recipe book to help fundraise for Cure Leukaemia at a time when they really needed it.
The story behind Emilia’s Cakes and Bakes recipe book
“I’ve always loved making cakes and I decided to start baking on my own for something to do whilst I was off school for lockdown.”
While Emilia set out on her baking journey, her mum Catherine was taking part in caboodle’s 2.6 charity challenge for Cure Leukaemia, where she would cycle 26 miles every day for 26 days.
“When caboodle started the 2.6 Challenge I wanted to help and because mum had pledged to cycle 26 miles a day for 26 days, I thought a treat at the end of each ride would help her through it. So I set myself the challenge of a bake a day for 26 days and collected the recipes I’d tried.”
Throughout the challenge Emilia baked everything from chocolate marble cakes to scones and even pizza’s, writing down all her recipes along the way.
After 26 days of baking Emilia was ready to give Paul Hollywood a run for his money. Instead though, she decided to spare him the embarrassment and instead put all her recipes into a recipe book specifically designed to raise money for Cure Leukaemia.
“This is a wonderful idea”
Her fundraising idea was highly praised by Cure Leukaemia co-founder Professor Charlie Craddock CBE.
“I am delighted that Emilia is fundraising for Cure Leukaemia and look forward to seeing the recipes in her book. As a keen amateur chef myself and someone who has seen how creative cooking can transform patients outcomes post-transplant, this is a wonderful idea, vitally it will also raise much needed funds for the work of Cure Leukaemia who fund vital clinical trials across the UK.”
Emilia hopes that her book will not only help raise important funds for Cure Leukaemia, but also raise vital awareness of the charity and how blood cancer affects so many across the world.
She also hopes to inspire bakers of all ages with her unique recipes and ideas, while also spreading some positivity and giving families an excuse to get together in the kitchen at a time where we all need it most.

How Emilia’s fundraising will help Cure Leukaemia
Cure Leukaemia are on a mission to put themselves out of business by accelerating vital research to find a cure for blood cancer in the next 15 years.
In the UK, a person is diagnosed with blood cancer every 14 minutes and it remains the third biggest cancer killer.
Thanks to the work of Cure Leukaemia, blood cancer patients have had access to life-saving treatment while the search for a cure has been accelerated.
Cure Leukaemia fund the Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP), which supports specialist research nurses in 12 hospitals across the UK including a facilitatory hub at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham where the charity is based.
The £3 million programme enables the rapid setup and delivery of pioneering clinical trials for blood cancer patients in areas covering over 20 million people in the UK. These provide life-saving options not currently available through standard care.
The programme also hopes to help continue global progress in finding cures for all forms of cancer.
Support from fundraisers like Emilia’s Cakes and Bakes go towards providing vital access to new trails, funding hugely important research and ultimately saving lives.
Fundraisers like this provide the foundations for Cure Leukaemia’s work as they build towards their goal of finding a cure in the next 15 years.
